Why should I care about my own Health ?

I have been meaning to write a blog about what health means to me an why it is so important. Personally I became more aware of what health is and means to me when I started my Osteopathy course, everyone was drinking herbal tea which was something I never knew existed until I became an Osteopath!! I also lost my both on my parents to Cancer when I was in my 20's and often wondered if they would still be here had our diet as a family been different.

I have always struggled to maintain my weight but have always enjoyed going to the gym but unfortunately this wasn't something we did as a family we were always quite sedentary. Once I graduated as an osteopath I became more interested in Nutrition after working for an amazing Osteopath in Peterborough who would always prescribe a high potency Vitamin C Powder and fish oil supplement to most of his clients.

Over the years my knowledge about exercises and nutrition has grown I have been lucky enough to spend time with Strength and Conditioning Coaches and personal trainers and attended various courses about supplementation and nutrition my biggest source of information has come from me researching things for myself and applying them to my daily life.

I have probably spent  more time in gyms in the last 10 years then I did in the previous 15 years.

So back to the original question why should we care about our own health ? Well its different for everyone but having missed out on having my parents in my life my biggest motivator was to live as long and healthy life as possible. From an osteopathic point of view I deal daily with issues which arise from sedentary lifestyles and a complete lack of mobility, we were designed to move; not to sit at desks for 8hrs a day. We are also designed to catch and cook our own meals and not rely on convenience food which we haven't prepared ourselves.

I will confess i was the worlds worst eater before I met Toni and a vegetable was either peas or sweetcorn but she encouraged me to try different foods to see if i really didn't like it or whether it was all in my head. As we have grown as a family we have also applied this approach to our daughter who despite our best efforts ( everything we gave her was homemade and organic !! ) Its taken almost 4 years but she is willing to try new things so we make the most of these windows when they appear and try to find fun ways of making food and getting her involved.

I will always encourage my patients to make a small change whether this is food or exercise and highlight that whatever the change is  it must be consistent as thats what produces results and long term change. Being healthy isn't about being skinny or looking amazing its about being the best possible version of yourself so you can be there for the people you love and who need you the most and that is something that I am very passionate about and try to put across in my treatments !!

So if you are thinking of making a change whatever that may be give us a call or drop us an e mail and get in touch because we are more than happy to be part of your journey.
